Emancipation Through Sublimation (The Arresting Gaze of My Disappearance)

video; ice, blown glass

I 3D scanned my body using a laser scanner, printed the 3D model, and made a rubber mold from the print. From the rubber mold came an ice casting, which I left in my freezer for six weeks, where it ultimately disappeared through sublimation.

I could have used the rubber mold to make a form out of glass that's relatively stable, but instead used it to make one of ice, less stable and more free. They look the same at t=0, but time reveals the difference. In contrast to glass, ice sculpture has the singular ability to sublimate in cold, dry conditions, freeing matter to reassemble into a multitude of forms, from thin sheets over ponds in winter, to fractal lines on the outside of airplane windows at 30,000 feet.
