W. Benjamin Bray

The 2011 Arctic Circle Residency that I’m preparing for has a new partner: the Council for the Arts at MIT.  With the help of their $2000 grant, I’ll be able to begin development of a remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) for exploring in and around Arctic ice formations, while recording cool video, taking pictures, measuring water quality, spying on the other participants etc.  Thank you, MIT!

This still leaves about $7K that I’ll need to cover via additional grants, donations, and personal savings. The Kickstarter.com project I began two weeks ago is still very much open for new contributions, so please spread the word, and help me close the gap.

I’m pretty excited for you, but sad the kickstarter project may not fund. Do you have a back up plan?

Hey Kitt! Yes, I overestimated how much of a kickstart I would get through that service, but before the deadline I’m going to send-out an email to backers with a link to an Amazon button where they can contribute directly for the same rewards. Everyone already has an Amazon account thanks to Kickstarter, so hopefully this won’t be too much on an additional hassle. Overall, I think the Kickstarter fundraising project went fairly well for a fundraising newbie, and I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone that has contributed – a great group of folks.
